Stosur aim is breaking Pennetta
SAM Stosur will take her US Open campaign to the bright lights of centre court as she battles to beat a player she has never defeated before.
Stosur – Australia’s last hope in the Grand Slam tournament – will go head to head against Flavia Pennetta in a feature timeslot at Arthur Ashe Stadium today.
Stosur’s coach David Taylor said Pennetta troubled Stosur – she had beaten the topranked Australian six times before – but he believed this match could be different.
“There’s not a player she hasn’t beaten – Maria (Sharapova), Serena (Williams), (Victoria) Azarenka – everyone. Except she hasn’t beaten Flavia Pennetta,” he said in comments posted to Stosur’s official website.
Taylor said Pennetta had a good tolerance for Stosur’s key weapons of a strong serve and strong forehand.
“Sam doesn’t get rewarded for doing the things she would typically get rewarded for,” he said.
He said Stosur’s poor record against Pennetta provided a mental battle as well.
“It would be a big step for her to overcome that,’’ he said.
‘‘I think she thinks she can win … she can win if she learns what she did wrong in those close matches.”
Stosur said she was pleased with how she had been playing and bounced off positive memories at Flushing Meadows, where she claimed the championship in 2011.
“I’m happy to be in the second week,” she said.
