Long live the Queen
TODAY the Queen will become the longest-reigning monarch in British history.
She will surpass her greatgreat grandmother Queen Victoria’s reign record at 5.30pm UK time to have served as monarch for 63 years and seven months – or, according to Buckingham Palace, exactly 23,226 days, 16 hours and 23 minutes.
The Queen would normally be taking her summer holidays at her private estate in Balmoral in Scotland but bowing somewhat to public pressure she will instead open a new rail line on the Scottish Borders and take a steam train ride.
But the 89-year-old insisted the day be “business as usual” for her and consort Prince Philip, and no real fuss be made about the milestone.
