FESTIVAL HAS FUSION ACT NEATLY TIED UP

- BELINDA SEENEY

BRIDGING the divide between ancient and modern, sound and movement, fact and fiction requires a delicate balancing act.

Award-winning Brisbane circus company Circa is up to the daunting task.

Its new work, Il Ritorno, an ambitious fusion of cir- cus, baroque opera, music and dance, has its world premiere at Brisbane Powerhouse tonight.

Circa artistic director Yaron Lifschitz has based the 80-minute genrebending show on Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi’s 17th century opera, Il Ritorno D’Ulisse in Patria, based on Homer’s Odyssey.

Il Ritorno plays a four- show season as part of Brisbane Festival.

He collaborated with composer Quincy Grant to inject the production with folk songs and new compositions, which will be performed by a quartet of opera singers accompanied by musicians.

Circa will tour it internationally, including dates at the Dusseldorf Festival.
