SCRAP IT OUT

-

TM: Pete, we’re into the NRL finals. Can you believe they’ve allowed eight teams to qualify this year given how poor the Dragons have been? PB: Zzzzz. Sorry. The Dragons have cured my insomnia. Wake me up when they are eliminated from the finals. Seriously, the top eight is a joke. TM: It’s not that bad, mate. Who would have picked Melbourne to finish fourth given Billy Slater went down during Origin? They could be a chance given the PB: I agree the Storm are deserved finalists but it’s time to go back to a top-five or topsix format. The bottom two invariably make up the numbers before bowing out. The top eight is a moneygrabbing exercise for the NRL. TM: At least we’re getting a Queensland derby on Saturday night. Who are you picking – Broncos or Cowboys? PB: My heart says the Cowboys but my (rough) head says the Broncos. Wayne Bennett has the Midas touch and I’m concerned about the Cowboys’ injury toll. Who do you like? TM: It’s hard to find a favourite. The Broncos have lost four of their past six games and Paul Green’s troops have dropped three of their past five. It might come down to who can scrap out a win and regroup with two weeks off. PB: Fair dinkum, get off the fence Trav, here’s some tweezers to pick out the splinters. The Broncos are specials. They are playing at Suncorp, their halves Anthony Milford and Ben Hunt are in career-best form and the Cowboys’ engine room is hurting. Matt Scott is a warrior but he has to be playing injured. TM: Hunt and the Milf have been fantastic this year but you’re forgetting something – Johnathan Thurston. If the game’s on the line, he’s the one you want in your team. Remember the Cowboys have beaten the Broncos in all three finals they’ve played. PB: Yes they have ... all in Townsville. Now the Cowboys are on Brisbane’s turf. And I’m still not convinced the Cows have the playmaking diversity to take the heat off Thurston. If the Broncos shut him down, coach Green will be seeing red. TM: Benny v Greeny. The master up against his former apprentice. Maybe that’s where this game will really be won. See you at Suncorp!
