CABARET STAR TO SIZZLE AT FESTIVAL
RHONDA Burchmore is known and loved for her ability to sing and dance up a storm. But the musical theatre and cabaret star’s latest show has her challenging even herself.
At 58, she is being described as a national treasure and this national treasure is going full tilt in BANG! BANG!, which opens in The Courier-Mail Spiegeltent tomorrow night.
It’s going to be high-octane entertainment to say the least, the much-loved star says. “I will need a stretcher at the end of it,” Burchmore said. “There’s no written dialogue, just a lot of songs and dancing for 70 minutes. It’s like a steam train.”
Burchmore will be joined on stage by TV host and actor Rob Mills and others, backed by a live band and mixes of recorded tracks of avant pop, ballads and upbeat dance numbers. She will cover songs by Lionel Richie, Tina Turner, Cher and Miley Cyrus, among others.
Brisbane Festival director David Berthold described the show as an “on stage explosion”. “For 30 years, Rhonda Burchmore has charmed and captivated Australian audiences with her larger-than-life personality, dynamic vocals and sizzling stage presence,” Berthold said. “This intoxicating show cranks up the heat at the beloved CourierMail Spiegeltent.”
Burchmore said she had never performed in the Spiegeltent and can’t wait. “We’ve been rehearsing in it and it feels like home already.”
