Pill-test­ing shop plan

RECRE­ATIONAL drug users would be able to pop in to a shop and test their pills un­der a plan be­ing pushed by the Aus­tralian Greens.

Party leader Richard Di Natale yes­ter­day paid a morn­ing visit to a Mel­bourne night­club to un­veil plans for 18 pill­test­ing shopfronts at a cost of $16 mil­lion over four years, with his Vic­to­rian col­leagues lead­ing the charge with plans for a $3.5 mil­lion two-year state trial.

The scheme pro­poses set­ting up pill-test­ing shops in ma­jor ci­ties as well as ru­ral areas, and would al­low pills to be tested for pu­rity and dan­ger­ous sub­stances, sav­ing young peo­ple’s lives, Dr Di Natale said.
