NORTH Queensland is “likely” to be hit with a tropical cyclone next week if a low sitting off the coast of Cairns intensifies.

A flood watch is in place as the north has been battered by rain over the last week and if the low develops into a cyclone, rainfall of 200mm plus could fall over Cairns and Townsville.

Bureau meteorologist Kimba Wong said the low was “likely” to intensify over the coming days.

Meanwhile, a minor heatwave is set to hit southeast Queensland by the middle of next week.
