UP to 150 Pfizer vaccines have been thrown out because doctors feared the vials were not stored at the right temperature at an aged care home in Melbourne.

But health authorities say wastage has been “far lower than expected” in the first week of the rollout, and the nation’s medical regulator is now considering changes to Pfizer’s -80C cold storage rules that would ease logistical barriers.

A batch of 25 vials was thrown out at St Vincent’s Care Services facility in Werribee yesterday – after residents got the jab on Wednesday – “out of an abundance of caution”, the Department of Health said.
