Look up for Skywhales
DID you see those Skywhales hovering over Canberra on the news in February? These amazing balloon sculptures by Patricia Piccinini were part of the exhibition event called Skywhales: Every Heart Sings, a project curated by the National Gallery of Australia. Skywhale and Skywhalepapa last flew above the national capital earlier this month and now they are heading to Queensland.
The Skywhales will fly at HOTA on the Gold Coast on June 26 and in Cairns through the Cairns Art Gallery over two weekends on August 28 and September 4.
The artist Patricia Piccinini has many works in the QAGOMA collection and Patricia Piccinini: Curious Affection was a major hit at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in 2018. National Gallery of Australia director Nick Mitzevich says the Skywhales “have become a part of our country’s contemporary culture”. They did have some problems flying them in Canberra on windy days, so fingers crossed for calm winter days when they get to Queensland.
