New call for a fire station

- ERIN SMITH

THE North Lakes community is once again calling for its own fire station after a much-loved 75-year-old woman was killed in a house fire last week.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at Hervey Street, just before 10.30am on Friday, April 9. Up to 30 firefighters were involved in the efforts to extinguish the fire, which had fully engulfed the home. Resident Precy Hopyek died in the fire.

The tragic incident brought new calls for a fire station at North Lakes. At the moment the closest station to North Lakes is Deception Bay. The state Labor government promised, last year, to build a fire station in North Lakes if reelected.

Mango Hill Progress Association president Laurence Christie said: “We are in the middle of a ring of stations. Ten minutes could save a house. Ten minutes could save a life.”
