Water restrictio­ns should be axed to free long-suffering homeowners from short showers, dirty cars and wilting gardens, says the Federal Government’s key economic advisory body. The Productivi­ty Commission says the restrictio­ns cost the community too much.

Thousands of Brisbane people last night had a perfect 90 second view of the space shuttle, Columbia, as it streaked across the southern sky at about 27,000km/h. But the shuttle’s two astronauts, Commander John Young and co-pilot Bob Crippen, were asleep at the time.

70 YEARS AGO

A total of 620 motor vehicles, including motorcycle­s, were stolen in Queensland in the 14 months to January 1. This was revealed in the Criminal Court by the Crown Prosecutor (Mr R.F. Carter). Mr Justice Stanley said sentences for this offence must be increased.
