16 ar­rested in beach blitz

SIX­TEEN peo­ple have been ar­rested in a crack­down on rowdy be­hav­iour at Mel­bourne’s St Kilda beach.

Po­lice swarmed the fore­shore and sur­round­ing ar­eas on Thurs­day night in Oper­a­tion Sand­safe.

Po­lice made 16 ar­rests for of­fences in­clud­ing be­ing drunk in a pub­lic place, pos­sess­ing drugs of de­pen­dence, at­tempted rob­bery, as­sault­ing po­lice, crim­i­nal dam­age and fail­ing to obey law­ful di­rec­tion. The blitz came a day after Port Phillip Coun­cil voted to ban al­co­hol and glass­ware over sum­mer on the St Kilda fore­shore.
