Lamar Abualsamh, 10, impressed her dad Ismail with her coding talents. She has also helped him lead a more healthy life with a website she researched and designed. IT’S not easy keeping your kids occupied during the school holidays. But Ismail Abualsamh found a great way to keep 10-year-old daughter Lamar entertained and she helped him stop smoking in the process. The Rockdale student attended one of several Code Camps across Sydney and came home with the skills to create her own website. Lamar chose to base her website on a program to help people stop smoking. Her dad was not only impressed with her tech skills, he says the program worked and he hasn’t smoked for more than three months. “It didn’t take a lot of convincing to get Lamar to attend Code Camp, she’s been using an iPad since she was three, so technology is a part of her life,” Abualsamh says. The proud dad says Lamar has been to three Code Camps and came up with the idea for her anti-smoking site after the second. “On her site, there’s lots of ideas and tips on how to stop smoking and images of how the organs of a smoker look from the inside,” he says. “I was a smoker for a long time, but Lamar has been helping me to quit, I haven’t had a cigarette since early October.” Sydney mother of three Hayley Markham started Code Camp three years ago. “Technology is something that’s scary for par parents because, for the first time ever, kids know someth something they don’t know,” she sa says. M Markham says the cam camps teach kids skills be beyond their years. “If you come to a Code Camp and you’re seven years o old, you’ll have ticked o off a Year 9-level s syllabus,” Markham sa says. “The kids have so m much fun, we want to ass associate technology with being fun, not neces necessarily just school or educati education-based. The kids don’t even realise they’re learning skill skills at Code Camp.”
