Warnie’s on the right track

The Daily Telegraph (Sydney) - - Saturday Extra -

Well done Shane Warne for trying to help save Australian cricket, because that’s exactly what it needs (“Bold Warnie”, 9/11).

The individuals who handed out the 12-month bans to Smith, Warner and Bancroft overreacted. They bowed to public outrage, much of it from people who have probably never even played cricket.

Ball tampering is a very grey area. No one will agree with the use of sandpaper, but “manicuring” has been going on for 100 years.

As for sledging, this has also been going on in most sports for ages. As long as it’s not personal or racist it’s called banter and is just a part of the game.

Other cricketing nations may sympathise a bit, but I bet they are loving it. Meanwhile, the Aussie cricketers are running scared, afraid to touch the ball or say a word.

Can we just get some sanity here please? David Young, Hamilton South
