Today’s new dawn just a bit yesterday
SAME-same, but different — there seemed something a little bit yesterday about Today when the “new-look” show launched on Monday morning.
Deb Knight and Georgie Gardner (pictured) helmed, flanked by new newsreader Tom Steinfort, entertainment reporter Brooke Boney and sports reporter Tony Jones.
Gardner took the lead at 5.30am, introducing viewers to the new panel, with several of them prefacing any stuff-ups with “first day of school” nerves. And despite being dumped for former Triple J newsreader Boney, Richard Wilkins made a bizarre appearance just after 8am in an awkward interview with actor Luke Bracey. Meanwhile, radiotrained Boney was still finding her TV feet, looking around aimlessly as if no one had told her which camera to look at.
And while Nine has been spruiking its new-look breakfast show for weeks, it was only the on-screen graphics that looked as if they’d been updated.
It seems viewers aren’t fans of the new line-up either.
One person wrote on the show’s Facebook page: “Sorry to say but the ‘New Today’ program with its new blend of hosts honestly is as boring as watching the paint dry.”
Another said: “Have been watching Today show forever. Sorry no more — off to Seven — Sunrise. Political correctness is crap.”
And there were also calls to bring back Karl, with one viewer commenting: “Watched Today for over ten years, not any more. Bring back Karl. He could be silly, childish, even quite annoying sometimes but he made it fun … so boring without him.” Another said she had switched to Sunrise because “The Today show just isn’t the same without Karl and the Today show family.”
Karl Stefanovic still has former foreign minister Julie Bishop in his corner. After his unceremonious dumping from hosting duties on Nine’s Today breakfast show days after his wedding in December, the senior Liberal politician told Confidential she is in regular contact with the television host.
“Karl and I keep in touch, he is going well,” Bishop told Confidential at the Crown and IMG pre Australian Open tennis party on Sunday in Melbourne (pictured below with partner David Panton).
“He has just married a beautiful girl and he is wonderfully happy.”
Bishop was a guest at Stefanovic’s wedding to fashion designer partner Jasmine Yarbrough in Mexico.
Nine sacked Stefanovic while he was on his honeymoon and also dumped Richard Wilkins, Sylvia Jeffreys and Tim Gilmore. “I am looking forward to seeing Karl on TV in the future,” Bishop said. Meanwhile Bishop has been bemused by recent stories on her expensive shoes, particularly a pair of $1700 Saint Laurent pumps. “I bought them in Dubai, where one buys shoes when you are sitting around waiting in transit for a flight,” she said.
