Tragic toll grows with drownings
TWO men drowned at popular swimming spots yesterday, taking this summer’s tragic toll to 18 across NSW.
On the South Coast, a 33year-old Sydney man, two other men and a woman had been snorkelling near the Kiama blowhole at about noon yesterday. Witnesses saw the man swept on to a lower shelf near the blowhole and called emergency services.
Lifeguards from Kiama local council used their jetski to pull the man from the water and started performing CPR on him (pictured), but he was unable to be resuscitated.
It came as emergency services responded to a man in his 60s who had a suspected medical episode while swimming between the flags at Boomerang Beach on the state’s midnorth coast. He was helped out of the surf by bystanders before paramedics arrived, but he could not be revived.
