Increase flood studies call - Cr Longmire
The scope of flood planning works should be more broadly based, covering most of the Federation Council area according to Cr Fred Longmire.
Flood planning projects already underway across Urana, Oaklands, Rand, Morundah and Boree Creek should also be considered for areas including Daysdale, Rennie, Balldale and Savernake according to Cr Longmire.
At council’s monthly meeting on July 17, he successfully moved a Notice of Motion that council contact relevant state agencies about the issues associated with flooding.
“Council should seek to have state government funding for flood studies across Billabong Creek, Wangomong, Back Berrigan, and Coonong, Colombo and Cocketdgong Creek systems to take into account significant changes to flood behaviour from on-farm works, channel systems, council road works and any other works, to allow farmers and the communities to better plan for, and manage and regulate works on the floodplain,” he said.
Cr Longmire mentioned the active group in the Sanger/Berrigan area who have been required to fund their own project.
“There was a lot of flood water in 2010 and 2016. We need to work together for the benefit of everybody in the community,” he said.
Cr Bronwyn Thomas said Cr Longmire’s motion is so important. She also referred to project funding coming out of landholders’ pockets, adding that state government assistance is in order.
