In­crease flood stud­ies call - Cr Long­mire

The scope of flood plan­ning works should be more broadly based, cov­er­ing most of the Fed­er­a­tion Coun­cil area ac­cord­ing to Cr Fred Long­mire.

Flood plan­ning projects al­ready un­der­way across Urana, Oak­lands, Rand, Morun­dah and Boree Creek should also be con­sid­ered for ar­eas in­clud­ing Days­dale, Ren­nie, Ball­dale and Sav­er­nake ac­cord­ing to Cr Long­mire.

At coun­cil’s monthly meet­ing on July 17, he suc­cess­fully moved a No­tice of Mo­tion that coun­cil con­tact rel­e­vant state agen­cies about the is­sues as­so­ci­ated with flood­ing.

“Coun­cil should seek to have state govern­ment fund­ing for flood stud­ies across Bil­l­abong Creek, Wan­gomong, Back Ber­ri­gan, and Coonong, Colombo and Cock­et­d­gong Creek sys­tems to take into ac­count sig­nif­i­cant changes to flood be­hav­iour from on-farm works, chan­nel sys­tems, coun­cil road works and any other works, to al­low farm­ers and the com­mu­ni­ties to bet­ter plan for, and man­age and reg­u­late works on the flood­plain,” he said.

Cr Long­mire men­tioned the ac­tive group in the Sanger/Ber­ri­gan area who have been re­quired to fund their own project.

“There was a lot of flood wa­ter in 2010 and 2016. We need to work to­gether for the ben­e­fit of ev­ery­body in the com­mu­nity,” he said.

Cr Bron­wyn Thomas said Cr Long­mire’s mo­tion is so im­por­tant. She also re­ferred to project fund­ing com­ing out of land­hold­ers’ pock­ets, adding that state govern­ment as­sis­tance is in or­der.
