The Free Press (Corowa) - - CLASSIES (03) CLASSIES -

Corowa Rowing Club had a small representation at the Nagambie Regatta on Saturday, December 1.

This regatta is the start of Rowing Victoria’s full course racing with events over 2,000 metres and 1,000 metres – a great indication of where our rowers are at.

Julie and Amy Underwood were entered in the Open and B Grade double sculls and against quality opposition were in for some tough racing.

The first event was the B grade event and the five-crew final saw the Corowa and Barwon crews move out from the rest of the field. In a great battle, the Corowa crew moved out to a length lead with 500 metres to go and held off the fast finishing Barwon crew.

In the Open event the Corowa crew came up against a red hot Richmond combination who got out fast to lead all the way with the Corowa crew in second place. Jayden Collier was entered in the Under 17 and B Grade single sculls as he steps up to Under 19 events in the New Year.

In Jayden’s last race in Under 17 he was in for a battle with the Footscray sculler for the first 1,000 metres before he made his move pulling away to win by four lengths.

The B grade event saw Jayden against the Essendon scullers and he was determined to put in a top show against older opposition. Jayden kept pace early before he made a strong move to take the lead and in his best row over the full course, powered to the line to record another win.

Jayden’s work in the gym and on the water is paying off as he and Amy are working towards the National Championships in Sydney with this regatta giving them a lot of confidence for the rest of the season.

The Annual Santa Regatta is on Sunday, December 16. Racing begins at 9.30am and all are welcome, with BBQ and refreshments available.
