‘Fantastic’ Diffey-Sutherland Shield day

Saturday was a very special day on the Rutherglen Cat’s calendar as the welcomed the Kiewa Sandy Creek Football Netball Club and Kiewa RSL members to join the Rutherglen “Cats” members and supporters along with the Rutherglen RSL members to Barkly Park on Saturday.

The two clubs were playing for the DiffeySutherland Shield, with the results of all grades of footy and netball being totalled up at the end of the day so as to come up with the eventual winner of the magnificent perpetual Shield.

We thank the Kiewa Sandy Creek Football Netball Club and both the Kiewa and Rutherglen RSL Branches for embracing this fantastic day with us.

This year it was Kiewa Sandy Creek Football Netball Club that was awarded the DiffeySutherland Shield after a very successful day.

The Rutherglen boys fought back in the second term and the game became are more even contest around the ground. The third quarter started much the same as the first, with Kiewa benefiting from cleaner ball use and extending their lead to 9 goals heading into the last.

To our credit, the boys never gave up, winning the final quarter and reducing the margin to roughly 6 goals and leaving us to rue missed opportunities and poor kicking into our forward 50. Cats 8-9-57 Def by KSC 14-11-95

Kiewa really fought back and lifted their game, restricting our scoring opportunities and giving themselves plenty of chances to score.

The final quarter, everyone stepped up to job they were asked to do, and we got back on top of Kiewa.

With great stoppages down back and quick ball movement through the middle, we were able to give our forwards plenty of opportunity to score so that we would eventually win the game. Very good effort by all the team.
