Rower’s finish season with a bang

Corowa Rowers Julie Underwood and Susie Scott competed in the Victorian Masters State Championsh­ips held at Nagambie last week.

Day one featured Julie and Susie lining up against each other in the D single scull.

Against a quality field of 8 featuring former Australian and Victorian representa­tives a tough race was on the cards.

The favourite from Melbourne R.C took the lead as Julie followed her race plan to keep with the rest of the field before making her move at the 500m mark. As the pace picked up Julie pushed into 2nd place and finishing strongly claimed the silver medal. Susie was determined to have a strong row and followed her race plan to finish the 1,000m race in a P.B time.

Julie and Susie teamed together in the D double scull with 2 heats and a top 4 finish was required to make the final. The Corowa crew had a strong start to push out early as the field settled the Corowa and Corio Bay doubles raced each other to the line with .19 seconds separating the crews and both moving into the final.

The final featured 8 doubles with the Corowa crew determined to claim a medal in a close race. The race panned out as expected with little separating the field at the 500m mark.

The intensity picked up as 4 doubles moved clear and in a sprint to the line the Melbourne Nagambie composite crew held of the Corowa double by .50 secs then a further .20 secs to third an exciting finish to the race.

Julie teamed up with scullers from South Melbourne and Ballarat in the D Quad scull.

The final featured 4 crews and after an even start Julie’s crew was sitting in 2nd place before the sprint to the line. Closing with every stroke the crew fell 2 seconds short but claimed another silver medal.

Julie’s final race was in the C single against younger opposition Julie was keen to finish with another medal. Julie rowed another strong race and in the final sprint to the line held of the sculler in 4th place by .20secs to claim the Bronze medal.

Julie and Susie efforts representi­ng the club at the State Championsh­ips was a great way to finish another successful season for the club.
