IN THE SWIM

The Gazette (Derwent Valley) - - FRONT PAGE - PATRICK GEE

THE work and passion of New Norfolk swim teacher Stacey Benson has been recognised with the AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety award.

Mrs Benson said she did what she did because she loved it but it was nice to be recognised.

“I redid [my training] 18 months ago, because I just felt the town and the community could do with another swim teacher here within the town,” she said.

Mrs Benson runs learn to swim and water safety programs at the New Norfolk pool as and also works as a fitness instructor at Freedom Healh and Fitness.

Freedom Health and Wellness owner Stacey Aldous nominated Mrs Benson and said she inspires her students to learn and makes each of them feel special.

“When they have her attention, they truly have her attention,” Mrs Aldous said.

“Her encouragement is so much more than a monotone ‘well done’.

“Her tone is full of energy and simply by using their names in an upbeat and fun way, they want to do their very best for her.”

Mrs Benson said swimming and water safety were crucial life skills that every child should have wherever they lived.

“There are dams, rivers and lakes so it’s not just teaching them to swim, it’s also teaching them about water safety,” she said.

“We encourage children of all abilities and families to encourage their children to swim.”

Mrs Aldous said Mrs Benson had excelled.

“Stacey has taught my kids not only to swim, but to believe in themselves,” she said. “She obviously gets a kick out of seeing the kids improve and loves teaching them and they think she is awesome.”
