Human rights events celebrated
HUMAN rights will be the focus at Willow Court this week when two historic declarations are commemorated.
Sunday will mark the 43rd anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of the Disabled Person.
On Monday the 70th anni- versary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights will be honoured.
Both dates will be marked at New Norfolk’s Willow Court tomorrow, with the Tasmania’s Governor Kate Warner launching the event.
The commemoration has been organised by council group Friends of Willow Court as part of this year’s Human Rights Week.
“The event seeks to acknowledge the significance of the two declarations as being the catalyst for change in the lives of people living with disability and mental illness,” FOW secretary Anne Salt said.
An art exhibition will be on display by Mosaic Support Services and a video on the principles of normalisation will be shown by the Valuing Lives group.
Personal stories about convicts from Willow Court and the Cascade Female Factory will also be shown.
The Human Rights Week event begins at 10am tomorrow.
