Political and tourism leaders are spruiking a jam-packed events schedule as cementing our city as an events mecca, but we hear whispers many are not impressed. Some hospitality stalwarts are not happy about the beating of chests for staging events in peak periods. “These politicians and tourism puppets are happy to announce how big events like Magic Millions and the cricket are a sign of how we are now the events capital and they are delivering for our city. Peak season is from Christmas Day until late January. It has been the same for decades. They have certainly not generated any new visitors, only given those who are already here an option to attend some events. Why focus on hosting these events when the city is already full? Work on a strategy for low periods and then start boasting,” says one restaurateur who asked not to be named. #lowseasoniscoming
