Scenes from a Marriage rates as a tour de force from real-life couple Ben Winspear and Marta Dusseldorp, raising a plethora of home truths
In the opening scene of Scenes from a Marriage last week, a full house (850 people) witnessed Marianne (Marta Dusseldorp) and Johan (Ben Winspear) being interviewed for a fashionable women’s magazine about their idyllic marriage. Skip ahead. The public image of their marriage begins to crumble. For the next 90 minutes, the audience laugh, gasp and squirm as the “storybook” marriage breaks down. Many of the emotions could be real for so many ... either directly, or through an acquaintance. The cleverly written script is so believably delivered by this real-life couple. Do three curtain calls say what the audience thought? I recommend attending. Locally, the big opening was GCLT’s Little Shop of Horrors directed by Brady Watkins. A large audience enjoyed the small cast antics of the man-eating plant and the adventures of the florist shop staff whose fortunes rise as it becomes the rage of Skid Row. The production was fast-paced and well sung, with some interesting new faces on stage. To book call 5532 2096. As this column goes to print, the finalists in this year’s Gold Coast Area Theatre Awards will have been announced. As with all awards, there will predictably be discontent and disagreement about finalists nominated. I would once again, urge theatre lovers to make the effort to see productions other than the ones they appear in – there are some fantastic shows being staged outside the central Gold Coast area, featuring some spectacular talent. The awards will enter their 10th year in 2018 and some changes will be announced. This year the Finalists’ Cocktail Party will be held on December 12 on the Calypso Terrace at the QT Hotel, with the presentation night in the Paradise Room at The Arts Centre Gold Coast. The QT has offered an attractive accommodation rate for the awards presentation night on December 12 – call the hotel’s groups reservationist Nicole Taylor on 5584 1200. In rehearsal on the Gold Coast now is GCLT’s Barmaids and Spotlight Youth Theatre’s Curtains. Currently playing is Javeenbah’s Obsession, GCLT’s Little Shop of Horrors, Bangalow Theatre Company’s Chicago, Ballina Players’ Mary Poppins, Tugun Theatre’s The Naked Truth and Redcliffe Musical Theatre’s The Addams Family. See you in a crowded foyer real soon!
