A TRUE BEAUTY
The life and times of prolific songwriter Carol King are celebrated in a magnificent musical that’s well worth the hop up the highway
Icaught a preview of Beautiful: The Carol King Musical at QPAC last week. I was blown away by the terrific Australian cast, interpreting the life and times of this prolific songwriter. All the songs were familiar – we grew up with them – the choreography was exceptional, and the show looks set to have a fabulous run. It’s recommended especially for anyone who was around in the ’60s and ’70s. The leading lady received a Helpmann Award this week for Best Actress in a Musical. This is fine theatre, with memorable music exquisitely played by a wonderful orchestra and sung by some of the country’s finest music theatre stars. Don’t miss it. Auditions for The Boy From Oz have been announced for Ballina Theatre’s production in November and December. They will be held over two days in late July and will be by appointment only. For all details on cast required, song and character lists, email firstname.lastname@example.org In a history-making first, Queensland Symphony Orchestra will perform tomorrow under the stars in Gladstone, conducted by internationally famed music director Alondra de la Parra. It will be the first time de la Parra has visited regional Queensland. She will be joined by 57 musicians and local music students and teachers, performers and groups for the Symphony Under the Stars concert, themed Dance Around the World. Underground Broadway has announced the full cast for its August production of Spring Awakening. Newcomer Harrison Aston will play Melchior Gabor, leading a cast of exciting Brisbane artists in this Tony Award-winning musical. Also starring is Jacqui McLaren as Wendla Bergmann, who audiences will recognise from her performance as Mimi in the sold-out season of Rent at the Brisbane Powerhouse. They will be joined by Oliver Lacey ( Bare) as Moritz Stiefel, Jordan Malone ( Kiss Me Kate) as Martha Bessell, Ruby Clark ( Rent, Grease) as Ilse Neumann, Tim Carroll ( The Boys of Sondheim, Grease) as Hanschen Rilow and Michael Nunn ( Bare) as Ernst Robel. It’s nice to see former Gold Coast actor Tim Carroll in another professional show.
