ugun Theatre Company will open Writer’s Block, written by local playwright Kellie Silver and directed by Dave Fraser, on August 9. Running until August 25, you can catch it on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7.30pm and August 11 and 18 at 2pm at Tugun Community Centre. It’s great to see local groups supporting local writers. Book by calling 0449 788 486 or go to trybooking.com/400313 There’s lots of activity on the Coast and surrounding areas this week. I attended a packed curtain-raiser last weekend for the forthcoming production of Meera to be held at HOTA on November 4. The cast was introduced to the audience in an interesting and exciting presentation of the show. This will be a terrific event, featuring more than 100 performers. Put it in your diary now – this will sell out. Hearts’ Aflame Productions will present Martha Baartz and John Reeves on August 18 at 3.30pm. This year the company is collaborating with Tyalgum’s fabulous O’Heart Festival in this very exciting concert at Flutterbies in the Little Shop Next Door. Renowned jazz saxophonist Martha Baartz will perform alongside acclaimed jazz pianist John Reeves in a tribute show to South African jazz legend Dollar Brand – Abdullah Ibrahim. The concert runs for one hour with no interval. Afterwards head next door to the lawns of Celestial Dew guest house for The Twilight Sessions, music event. For more information call 0488 713 241. Javeenbah Theatre will present the blockbuster play Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks by Richard Alfieri from September 7 to 22. I remember seeing this with Nancye Hayes and Todd McKenney when it premiered in Australia. It’s a fabulous play. A two-hander, it has Lily Harrison played by Joanne-Fae Worland and Michael Minetti (the dance teacher) played by Andrew Cockroft-Penman. Lily is living alone in a Florida retirement unit. She signs up for ballroom dance lessons in her own home. Michael is her assigned instructor and over the course of the six weekly lessons the two share history, differences, dancing and lots of laughs to form a friendship. It’s a very funny show and with these two experienced players, sure to be a huge success. Bookings are now open on Javeenbah’s website. Indefatigable theatre party organiser Doreen Hinton is putting together a theatre party for Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Starring Tony Sheldon as Bernadette, the theatre parties will go to Lyric Theatre, QPAC on October 3 at 1pm and October 17 at 1pm. The show is based on the Oscarwinning film. Party tickets are $75 per person. Call Doreen on 0403 810 940 or email taurus28@optusnet.com.au In rehearsal is Javeenbah Theatre’s Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks, Spotlight’s Not the Messiah (He’s a Very Naughty Boy), GCLT’s Run for Your Wife and Spotlight’s We Will Rock You. Auditions are coming up for Javeenbah’s A Kick in the Baubles and GCLT’s Hello, Dolly! on Sunday. See you in a crowded foyer soon.

Tugun Theatre’s new play Writer's Block opens next Thursday and runs until August 25.
