Don’t miss next month’s charity concert, featuring song, dance and comedy, including favourite tunes from some truly great musicals
Afabulous charity concert is being arranged by local theatre musician Mary Walters in aid of the James Jacobs Fellowship Christmas Day Lunch at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Southport. Called One Enchanted Evening, it’s a sparkling evening of song, dance and comedy featuring favourites from the musicals South Pacific, Chess, The King and I, Les Mis and more. Performers include chanteuse Kirri Adams, Anne Ryan, Clem Halpin, Louise Harris, Chris Catherwood, Steffi Kriz, Katrina Lardner, Martin Jennings, Rodrigo Medina Noel as well as Yours Truly, and award-winning dance ensembles from Napa, choreographed by Kim Reynolds. It’s taking place September 13 from 7.30pm at Spotlight’s Main Theatre. Tickets are $25, including a sumptuous supper at interval. Sounds like a fun evening for a good cause. Spotlight Theatre will open The Marvellous Wonderettes soon. A sequel to last year’s Wonderettes show, four girls are at a retirement party for their favourite teacher and later attend their 20-year high school reunion. Directed by Sue and Paul Belsham, this is a musical with a live band, with music from the ’70s. Tickets are available from Just Funkin Music Store, River St Ballina with a $2 per ticket booking fee, or online at the theatre’s website with no fee. Those looking for another dose of Hello, Dolly! should make their way up the highway to Toowoomba’s Empire Theatre where the Toowoomba Choral Society is staging the show September 7-9. Leading man Rob Horton is replaced by Grant Ebeling to play Horace Vandergelder. Book online. Matt Ward Entertainment hosts the Musical Theatre Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) has achieved its highest attendance on record for the year ending July 2018. Attendance at QPAC reached 1,573,582 for the 201718 financial year, exceeding the previous record set in 2014-15 (1,405,101). Opening September 7 and running until September 22 is Javeenbah’s Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks. Lily, the widow of a Southern Baptist Minister, signs up for dance lessons with Michael. Each of their six lessons is filled with laughter GCLT’s final production for the year will be the pantomime Cinderella, directed by Stuart Lumsden. Auditions for this classic will be held at the theatre at 10am on September 30. In rehearsal is Javeenbah Theatre’s Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks, GCLT’s Run For Your Wife and Hello, Dolly!, Javeenbah’s A Kick in the Baubles and Spotlight’s The Marvellous Wonderettes and We Will Rock You. Playing is Tugun Theatre Company’s Writer’s Block and Tweed Theatre Company’s First Things First.
