The Gold Coast Bulletin - Play Magazine - - NEWS - KATE PETERS

Opening this Saturday night is the highly anticipated Broadway blockbuster Hello, Dolly! at Gold Coast Little Theatre. With a star-studded cast of principal players, the show will run for five weekends throughout November. Playing the lead is award-winning actor Amy McDonald, supported by veteran actor Grant Ebeling and a cast of luminaries, including Louise Harris (from South Pacific, Mack & Mabel), Katrina Lardner (from Piccadilly Olde Time Music Hall, All Shook Up), Martin Jennings (from Phantom of the Opera, Young Frankenstein) and many others. Tickets are on sale now online or at 5532 2096. This week Spotlight Theatre opened the long-awaited musical production We Will Rock You. Dressing Roomers heard that one of the lead actors was taken down with a bad knee the day of opening and couldn’t go on. Local leading man Jackson Brash arrived back from New Zealand just in time to do a two-hour rehearsal, stepped into the breach and got a standing ovation. Jackson used a script throughout, only seen for the first time three hours before, but his skills relating the words made the script disappear to an audience willing him on. Traditionally a dance captain, Georgia Beck who played leading female role Scaramouch, was a lovely singer. Former The Voice contestant and Gold Coast performer Charne Louise was also an incredible presence on the stage. The band of two guitars, bass, keyboard and drums recreated all of Queen’s most iconic hits, with the audience participating in all the right places. The pace was relentless and the energy electric. We Will Rock You runs until November 11. Tickets are available online or at 5539 4255. Spare a thought for casts who are too busy with their own shows to see others on the Coast – directors of both Javeenbah’s A Kick In The Baubles and Hello, Dolly! have been working overtime to come up with a time each cast can visit the other. GCLT was part of the Open House In rehearsal this week is Javeenbah Theatre’s A Kick In The Baubles, GCLT’s Hello, Dolly! and pantomime Cinderella. Mates Theatre Genesis is rehearsing for Drinking Habits, Tugun Theatre Company is preparing for Pins & Needles, and Spotlight is showing We Will Rock You. See you in a crowded foyer real soon.
