Rapper Max MacKinnon from hip hop trio Bliss N Eso can’t wait to return to the Gold Coast to headline the popular Shakafest on Saturday
In his heart, rapper Max MacKinnon, aka Esoterik, one third of Australian hip hop trio Bliss N Eso, is a coastal kid. For a brief stint in his childhood he called the Gold Coast home, and that’s why he’s thrilled to be headlining music festival Shakafest in Southport this weekend.
“When I was very young, it was around Year 4 or 5, I was living with my mum, she said ‘let’s go up to paradise’,” Max says.
“I just remember a whole bunch of amazing times.
“I used to live in Tweed Heads, then Coolangatta, Benowa, Robina.
“I’ve been up there three times this year on holidays, bringing my little man to the beaches. It’s like going back home.”
Bliss N Eso fans would know how much childhood memories influence their music, none more so than 2017 single Moments.
It’s their honest reminiscing of hardship and happiness that connects with so many, helping to change, and even save, the lives of their fans.
“Moments, if you listen to the first verse, Bliss’ verse, he says ‘your first kiss, your first this’ … he’s triggering words that’s making you remember yours,” Max says.
“People would literally start diving into their own memories. Moments is just one of them. Our fan base is not the type of fan base to put the sticker on the fridge.
“We’re talking verses tattooed over their bodies, drive 700km to the show. It’s full-blown dedication.
“When they meet us it’s always some life changing, amazing story. Like ‘you’ve got my daughter off these drugs’ or ‘you got me out of depression’.
“It’s amazing. It blows you away sometimes.”
Moments is sure to make the set list at Shakafest being one of their latest releases, but punters can also expect to hear some of their biggest songs in their 10 years of creating music.
“Now that we’re on the seventh LP we’re working on now, that’s a lot of music,” Max says.
“You’ve got to have the classics, and you’ve got to have the new ones in there.
“If I go see Cyprus Hill, I want to hear Hits From The Bong, you know?
“We’ve always got those classics in there. We always try and add some free style, beat box, always something special.
“We always bring the fire.” Bliss N Eso perform at Shakafest on Saturday. Doors open noon, tickets start at $94.90 from oztix.com.au
