Two the­atre com­pa­nies are draw­ing large au­di­ences for their spec­tac­u­lar pro­duc­tions. Javeen­bah The­atre’s A Kick in the Baubles has been at­tract­ing big crowds to its Christ­mas-themed show, and Bal­lina Play­ers’ The Boy From Oz is also pulling in ex­cel­lent num­bers. It shows that peo­ple like pro­duc­tions that they can re­late to and make them laugh. A Kick in the Baubles is a well­writ­ten farce about a fam­ily at Christ­mas time. It’s fast-paced with an ex­cel­lent cast. The Boy From Oz is the cel­e­bra­tion of the life of Peter Allen, one of Aus­tralia’s great­est song­writ­ers and per­form­ers. Birk­dale’s Mates The­atre Gen­e­sis is of­fer­ing the rare op­por­tu­nity to learn the skills of the­atri­cal light and sound op­er­a­tion in a one-day work­shop run by univer­sity lec­turer James Auld. James has been in­volved in sound re­pro­duc­tion and op­er­a­tion since the 1950s, and light­ing de­sign and man­age­ment for am­a­teur groups and schools since 1968. This is a prac­ti­cal work­shop which as­sumes lim­ited-to-no pre­vi­ous knowl­edge of at­ten­dees. You will gain a work­ing un­der­stand­ing of the equip­ment and tech­niques used in light­ing and sound, in­clud­ing back­ground the­ory, de­sign, hard­ware fa­mil­iari­sa­tion, electrical knowl­edge and an in­tro­duc­tion to the Show Cue Sys­tem com­puter pack­age.
