Legendary Aussie performer Noni Hazlehurst will present one of the gongs at next week’s much-anticipated Gold Palm Theatre Awards
The organisers of this year’s Gold Palm Theatre Awards announced this week that special guest and Tamborine Mountain resident Noni Hazlehurst will be attending and presenting an award. Hazlehurst will award a winner at the presentation night at HOTA on Tuesday, December 11. Hazlehurst has been a household name in Australian entertainment for three decades, and her recent triumphs have included A Place To Call Home and the film Ladies In Black. She is currently filming a TV series on the Gold Coast. A big opening in Brisbane this week was Two Man Tarantino at The Visy Theatre, Powerhouse. Two Man Tarantino tells the story of the last video store in the city closing for good. Employee Stephen Hirst is packing up when long-time customer Emily Vascotto arrives to wish him good luck. Before they embark on their separate journeys, they learn that they have a common passion: the love of Tarantino films. They have a crazy idea to re-enact the entire Quentin Tarantino filmography in the craziest possible ways in one hour – from Reservoir Dogs to The Hateful Eight and everything else in between. The props are weapons, the audience is the cast, and every film is covered. Written by Christopher Wayne, the co-creator of the international comedy sensation The Naked Magicians, and directed by Maureen Bowra, Two Man Tarantino is a hilarious and nostalgic two-handed experience. The selections of movie quotes and impersonation of characters are on the money. The improvisation is quick, innovative and polished. The set is minimal, however, the props are used to surprising effect. The physical scenes are choreographed well with combat and small stunt work employed to thrill the audience, particularly when scenes of Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained are interwoven into one “bloody” free-for-all. Minimal lighting and sound design ensures the audience is immersed in Tarantino’s infamous scenes. Iconic tracks from the films only bolster the craziness. The In rehearsal this week is the pantomime Cinderella at Gold Coast Little Theatre, opening tomorrow night. There are also lots of Christmas concerts in rehearsal. Visit the Gold Coast Theatre website for dates and venues. See you in a crowded foyer.
