Hoodoo Gurus couldn’t think of a better way to spend an evening than headlining Under The Southern Stars at the Broadwater Parklands
Where exactly is the Hoodoo Gurus’ scene? Guitarist Brad Shepherd says it could just be on stage at a Queensland music festival in summer.
“Playing in the evening of a Queensland summer, there is no downside to this,” Brad says.
“Those outdoor stages where it’s relaxed, it’s a fun style of event – it’s always delightful.”
On January 19, Australian rock band Hoodoo Gurus will headline music festival Under The Southern Stars at the Broadwater Parklands.
With a top Aussie line-up including You Am I, Sheppard, the Superjesus, British India and the Getaway Plan, Brad says he’s not sure how the Gurus will fare as the final act on the night.
“With a bill like this, we’re all pals, but we’re all very competitive as well,” Brad says.
“Everyone tries to outdo everyone else, and we’re on the very end of that.
“You Am I are going to blow us off stage, so we have to bring our A-game.
“As someone attending the event you really can’t lose – everyone will be performing at the peak of their powers.”
You’d think the pressure would have the band perfecting every element of their set from start to finish, but that’s not how the Gurus rock and roll. If anything, keeping shows as unique as possible reinforces their status as one of the nation’s most iconic musical acts.
“We’re reliably loud and energetic, certainly, but beyond that, I can’t tell you what we’ll do on the night,” Brad says.
“We change our set every single night. A lot of bands, contemporary acts, tend to play the same set every night. We don’t do that.
“We’re old enough and ugly enough to have accumulated a significant back catalogue. We have hundreds of songs we can draw upon.
“While we appreciate there are a few songs that people would like to hear from us, and they will hear from us – Come Anytime, Bittersweet, Like Wow Wipeout, or What’s My Scene – we fill in the gaps between those songs with different songs every night.
“If you’re a Hoodoo Gurus enthusiast, there’s always a chance to dive deep with us. But we also appreciate there may be a lynching mob if we don’t play What’s My Scene,” Brad laughs.
