POETRY IN MOTION
In a newly announced Bleach* Festival performance, Gratitude and Grief combines the angelic voice of Katie Noonan with her jazz trio Elixir and the poetry and thoughts of Michael Leunig
The words of an Australian philosopher and poet will be brought to life by an angelic ARIA-award winning singer as part of a captivating performance in this year’s Bleach* Festival.
Tickets are now on sale for Katie Noonan’s Gratitude and Grief album tour, combing the talents of her jazz trio Elixir with the literary works of Michael Leunig for a magical night of spoken poetry and music.
Performing on the Gold Coast April 18, the intimate show will be staged under the Spiegeltent as part of the annual celebration of culture and arts.
Uniting Michael’s poetry with Katie’s divine vocals and Elixir’s sublime improvisation, the Gratitude and Grief album and shows have received critical acclaim for its seamless translation of Leunig’s poetry into stunning jazz.
Fronted by Katie and accompanied by saxophonist Zac Hurren, folk jazz trio Elixir are approaching 20 years in the music industry.
The band have enjoyed great success with an ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album in 2011 as they seek to explore the relationship between text and sound with Australian poetry.
Katie’s technical mastery and pure voice makes her one of Australia’s most versatile and beloved vocalists.
The five time ARIA Awardwinning songstress first received widespread praise as the singer of indie-pop band George, since taking audiences on inspiring journeys through jazz, pop and classical music.
Her recent releases include collaborations with guitarist Karin Schaupp for their 2017 ARIA winning album Songs of the Latin Skies, as well as the internationally-acclaimed Brodsky Quartet for the 2016 album With Love and Fury.
Katie has also worked more recently with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for the premiere performance of Gratitude and Grief.
Similarly, Zac is a truly unique saxophonist, composer and improviser, making this a sensational musical pairing. Gratitude and Grief with Katie Noonan and Elixir performs on April 18 as part of the Gold Coast Bleach* Festival. Tickets on sale now at $49 per person at katienoonan.com
