TERROR ON 37TH FLOOR

Cops charge millionaire after bashed model's desperate climb

- ROBYN WUTH reports on

A TERRIFIED model climbed off a 37th floor balcony to escape a beating allegedly inflicted by her millionaire Russian boyfriend. Maryna Kosukhina, 28, scaled the balcony railing and inched across to a neighbouring apartment at Broadbeach’s Oracle towers on Saturday morning. Police say they have video footage of Vitali Roesch, 43, attacking his Ukrainian lover before her dramatic escape.

A MILLIONAIRE Russian businessman has been accused of assaulting his model girlfriend and forcing her to jump to a neighbouring balcony 37 floors above the ground.

Vitali Roesch, 43, was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm after allegedly attacking his Ukrainian partner Maryna Kosukhina, 28.

Police allege the incident occurred at the Oracle apartments in Broadbeach around 2.30am Saturday.

The couple had been to a friend’s engagement party and were returning home when an argument erupted in the foyer of the building, police said.

Graphic security footage seized by police allegedly shows Mr Roesch assaulting Ms Kosukhina.

Police say the pair went back to an apartment on the 37th floor where police were called after Ms Kosukhina climbed the balcony to a neighbour’s unit.

Paramedics treated Ms Kosukhina for facial fractures before she was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital.

She has refused to make a complaint, however, detectives from the Southern Investigative Group have charged Mr Roesch with assault occasioning bodily harm.

Mr Roesch, whose business interests include moneylending and printing, was slapped with a massive tax bill after being audited by the Australian Taxation Office.

During a stoush over his net worth, the Australian tax office said Mr Roesch was unable to say how he was able to fund his lifestyle, including buying two properties in the 2004 financial year.

Mr Roesch and Ms Kosukhina are regulars at social events held at Gold Coast nightclubs and restaurants.

The arrest highlights a heightened response to domestic incidents after three domestic violence related homicides on the Gold Coast this year.

In January, a couple were stabbed to death, allegedly by the woman’s ex-husband.

In February, a woman, 10 weeks pregnant, was attacked and killed with a tomahawk, allegedly by her ex-partner.

Official figures show the number of DVO breaches on the Gold Coast has doubled in four years.

Statistics on the Queensland Police Service website show 1117 orders were breached last year, almost double the 646 breached in 2010.

In an article on The Conversation, Bond University criminologist Dr Terry Goldsworthy said there were “clear system gaps” that needed to be improved.

Dr Goldsworthy called for the creation of a legislationbased national domestic homicide review panel.

“This would allow us to learn from the lessons that each domestic homicide can provide, regardless of jurisdictional boundaries,” he said.

“The simple existence of an order will not stop domestic homicides from occurring; targeted and sustained enforcement will.”
