Hall still a rising Sun

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

TOWNSVILLE’S Josh Hall hopes his leap of faith against Geelong will eventually lead to a regular role up forward as he aims to crack the Gold Coast Suns’ starting 22.

Hall may play in the Suns’ second NAB Challenge clash against Greater Western Sydney on Saturday after kicking the go-ahead goal in the weekend’s eight-point win against the Cats at Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville.

His late effort put the Suns back in front after a Geelong revival and his teammates rallied, kicking another pair of late majors to seal the victory.

Visiting William Ross State High School yesterday where he did his secondary studies, Hall said he was confident of having a careerdefining season after being promoted to the Suns’ senior playing list.

“That’s another step forward for me and hopefully I can get more consistent and get that into my game,” he said.

“My goal this season is to get into that big three with Charlie Dixon, Tom Lynch and (Sam) Day but if that doesn’t eventuate I can play a team role wherever it is.

“Hopefully I took a small step on the weekend to getting into that tall two or three up forward.”

Hall admitted to pre-game nerves leading in to Sunday’s clash, which was watched by host of his close friends and family in the crowd at Riverway.

Pushing a couple of early attempts wide, Hall took a heavy fall in the third quarter, receiving treatment before returning to action about five minutes later.

He attacked the ball at every opportunity, kicking his match-defining goal 10 minutes from fulltime.

“I didn’t have a look at the scoreboard or anything like that, I just went through my routine and kicked straight and true,” Hall said.

The former champion high jumper is relishing his time at the Suns, who picked him in the 2011 rookie draft.

He has since made five AFL appearances.
