Winter? You can’t be serious

- EMMALINE STIGWOOD EMMALINE.STIGWOOD@NEWS.COM.AU

DON’T be fooled by the weekend’s beautiful weather – today is the first day of winter.

Lifesavers Kira Kinsey, 19, and Dani Radford, 22, lapped up a dawn swim at North Burleigh yesterday.

However, a morning dip may be off the agenda for the rest of the week with the mercury tipped to fall to single figures .

TODAY might mark the official start of a new season but we will have to wait until tomorrow for any real hint of winter.

While this winter is expected to be warmer than average, the first blasts of southerly air is expected this week.

Average daily temperatures will sit around 20C for most of the week but minimum temperatures will drop by about five degrees.

For some parts of the Gold Coast like Nerang this will mean overnight and early morning temperatures of about 5C on Wednesday while closer to the coast is will be a slightly warmer 9C overnight.

It will be warmer in the water with ocean temperatures sitting at a comfortable 22C, making a quick dip still a real possibility on the Gold Coast.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Sam Campbell said while temperatures would drop this week, it would be a warmer season in general thanks to strengthening El Nino conditions.

He said winds would remain mostly southerly or southwesterly during the week when maximum temperatures would hover in the 20s – which is about average.

“By Tuesday cooler air will be pushing up from the south causing temperatures to drop by five or six degrees,” he said.

“In some ways this will be the start of winter with temperatures not expected to warm up greatly for the rest of the week.”

With only a slight chance of rain later in the week, the start of winter points to dry conditions for months to come.
