Bond reassessing goal after fourth loss in row

- JACK HARBOUR RUGBY UNION

HAVING lost three on the trot you couldn’t have blamed Bond University for being eager to get back in the winners’ column.

But that impatience cost the side against Wests in an agonising 16-15 loss on Saturday.

Bond University slumped to sixth on the Queensland Premier Rugby standings with their fourth consecutive loss but coach Sean Hedger remains positive about his side’s ability to break back into the top four.

Hedger said despite the loss, he saw an improvement in his side’s ability to win the ball and keep possession.

Fuimaono said Bond rushed their approach at Wests line which consistently led to turnovers.

“It was through the whole game,” he said.

“We were pretty much out of our half, into theirs on one play and then we’d try to push it … and we had no support.

“They would gather … and we’d be back in our own half. It wasn’t the best scenario, especially when you’re a forward.”

Fuimaono said finals football had been the aim for Bond all year but he now believed it was important not to get any further ahead than the next game in order to turn things around.

“Semi-finals has always been our goal but I think we need to try to veer away from that and just think of each game at the moment.

“It’s like we’ve lost a bit of confidence really so we’re just trying to get that back.”

Hedger said teenage hooker Alex Mafi was impressive in his premier grade debut after being elevated from colts.

“Digger McMillan was very good at openside flanker,” Hedger said.

“Because Mafi went to hooker, Nick Turner went to tighthead prop (and) our setpiece was much better. (Turner) did a really good job.”
