Board in crosshairs after live-baiting investigation

- SETTING THE PACE with BRAD DAVIDSON

THE whispers are growing stronger that some big names at Racing Queensland will be shown the door as Alan MacSporran, QC, prepares to hand the Premier today his report into how live baiting in the greyhound industry could go undetected by racing officials.

There is also a strong tip that the RQ All Codes Board could be dissolved and the three codes – greyhounds, harness and thoroughbreds – could go back to looking after their own affairs.

There’s no hiding from the fact Racing Queensland has dropped the ball by not detecting live baiting in the state and it’s likely someone will be held accountable.

But I’m not sure a full-scale clean-out is the way to go.

The industry has come a long way in the past few years and while a change at the top is likely, a full clean-out will only halt momentum.

IF you keep a black book punters, write down the name Good Project in capital letters.

You will struggle to find a better run in Australia on Saturday after the Chris Wallertrained three-year-old came from last to finish a close fifth in the Listed Queensland Day (1200m) at Doomben. The race was run at snail pace and the horse was never entitled to drag lengths off the leaders like he did in the straight.

I’m not sure what’s next for the promising gelding but he will hard to beat wherever he lines up.

YOU won’t go broke backing the Snowden stable.

Peter and Paul Snowden have mastered the skill of finding the perfect race for their horses.

They’ve had an abundance of success this winter already and Dublin Lass continued the run in the Listed Bright Shadow Handicap (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday.

She was so well weighted in that race.

Stablemate Peggy Jean was the best weighted horse in Australia in the last race of the day but may have just needed the run first-up after she finished a 1.6-length seventh.

The Snowdens have a knack of placing their horses to perfection and a lot of trainers could take a leaf out of their book.

WE might have won Game One of the State of Origin on Wednesday night but the Queenslanders seemed to have raised the white flag in the horseracing ranks.

NSW’s domination of the Queensland winter carnival continued on Saturday and there looks to be more pain in store for the Maroons this weekend.

HOW good is Delicacy? Werther gave some tough, old stayers a flogging in the Eagle Farm Cup on Saturday and Delicacy picked up that horse and spat him out in the SA Derby three weeks ago.

That was after she won the Australasian Oaks a week earlier as well. She could turn into a star next season as may Queensland Oaks winner Winx.

LET’S all hope Lumosty gets a run in the Stradbroke Handicap on Saturday.

It would be a shame if she didn’t and it would be a nightmare for the Brisbane Racing Club and Racing Queensland.

The boost in prizemoney of the Stradbroke to $2 million this year hasn’t had the desired effect with some exciting prospects bypassing the race.

As well trainer Gai Waterhouse told stewards yesterday that Najoom had not fully recovered from an injury she sustained last week and will not take her place in the race.

The last thing officials need is for Lumosty to miss out.
