KEEP BEING KYRGIOS

Kyrgios intends to conquer or fail on his own terms despite criticism over his antics in three striking wins at the All England Club last week.

In each of those matches, he has either been warned for unsportsmanlike behaviour, argued with officials or been cautioned for swearing.

McEnroe, the sport’s most infamous firebrand, says Kyrgios is being unfairly criticised.

“People are starting to get on him and to say they don’t like the way he’s cut his hair and he’s talking too much,” McEnroe said.

“The truth is, he’s a breath of fresh air for the game.

“I think he is without a doubt one of the most dangerous players in the draw.

“He is, to me, going to win majors. He will be inside the top five within a year.”

With wins over Diego Schwartzman, Juan Monaco and seventh seed Milos Raonic, Kyrgios is rapidly building a global profile – not all of it because of his startling tennis.

He was warned by American umpire Ali Nili not to speak to him during the second round.

And bouncing racquet against Raonic narrowly avoided hitting a spectator. If it had done so, he could have faced disqualification.

Asked if he would change, Kyrgios was unbudging.

“I like to watch entertaining tennis,” he said. “I feel you should express yourself. You know, it’s a sport.”

Former world No. 1 Andy Roddick said: “Would I want my child to do it? Maybe not. But would I watch it? I probably would.”

World No.20 Gasquet is an unabashed admirer of Kyrgios’ expressive nature.

“I have no problem with that,” he said. “I think it’s great for the game.

“He has a good personality. He’s fun to watch on the court. He’s nice off the court.”
