Foster set to ‘home’ in as Porsche Cup crowns king

NICK Foster is on the cusp of overcoming a pointless opening four races and current Bathurst 1000 V8 series champion Steven Richards to win the Porsche Carrera Cup.

The 23-year-old holds a 15.5-point lead over reigning Carrera Cup champion Richards going into the final round of the series, to begin today at the Gold Coast 600.

A win for either driver will cement a series win but it couldn’t be a better venue for Brisbane-based Foster, who considers the Surfers Paradise track his home and his favourite.

“It’s a pretty exciting track for me,” Foster said.

“It’s a bit of a home track for me as well and I enjoy racing there. The circuit is awesome so I’ll go and have another crack.”

The Bob Jane T-Marts Racing driver knows exactly what is at stake in the race that marked his rise in the Carrera Cup series last year.

“No doubt guys like him (Richards), Bairdo (Craig Baird) and Matt Campbell want to get another win on the board and all these boys are strong at the back half of the year so it’s not going to be easy,” Foster said.

“But we have got some runs on the board and pace throughout the year to build off.”

Foster has enjoyed his own resurgence in the second half of a series where he looked a certain outsider following a horror start.

The talented driver failed to finish in the two opening races in Round 1 in Adelaide before not appearing in the third and failing to finish again in the first race of the round in Melbourne.

But Foster hit back hard, winning eight of the 15 races since then to take the overall series lead.

The tight Gold Coast circuit will present even more challenges as Foster aims to win the biggest title of his career.

“The Gold Coast is a really unforgiving track,” Foster said.
