“Please waive the fines that you’ve given and make it very clear to everybody where they’re not allowed to park because at the moment it’s ridiculously unclear,” he said.

“We work.”

For the best part of a year, Mr Price said he often parked on the grass outside Musgrave Sports Park, but had never been slugged before.

The 59-year-old from Alstonville said he was shocked to receive the ticket and said he thought the $243 demand was excessive.

“There were no signs saying just want to get to ‘do not park said.

“There’s a whole bunch of KEITH PRICE here’,” he parking spaces and a lot of people park around the edges.

“The parking at the hospital is outrageously expensive. You don’t get even a staff discount or anything. A lot of people simply can’t afford it.

“How can council justify such a steep fine?”

Area councillor Dawn Crichlow said while motorists were allowed to park for free at Musgrave Sports Park, they were not allowed to stop on the grass.

Cr Crichlow said she was sympathetic for staff who had to pay exorbitant prices for parking at the Gold Coast University Hospital, but was happy council officers took initiative last week.

“They’ve been parking there for years along the driveway and near the football club,” she said.

“They’ve started parking on the grass ... that ruins the park.

“We allow them to park both sides of the driveway ... right up to the club.

“I know they can’t afford to park in the hospital – it’s a bloody rip-off.

“You just can’t park on a park. It’s as simple as that.”

Cr Crichlow said she had received a raft of complaints about the tickets issued by council officers on Wednesday and one challenge from a driver had been turned down.
