MONEY FROM WAX ... AND IT’S NOTHING TO DO WITH SURFBOARDS

- NICHOLAS MCELROY

SLICK moves have seen these two Palm Beach mates kick off a hair wax brand which has gone gangbusters across the country.

Fashion industry workers Daen Brown and Dan Binskin went to market with 25,000 tins of King Brown Pomade in September 2014 after almost a year of developing their hair formula.

Mr Brown said the product has flown off the shelves with the pair distributing hundreds of thousands of tins.

“Most people don’t realise were from the Gold Coast and it’s made in Queensland, they assume it’s a Sydney or Melbourne-centric brand,” he said.

Mr Brown said he got the idea for the brand after noticing there were no competitors for leading men’s hair care company Uppercut Deluxe while doing work for them.

“When I stopped working with them I realised they didn’t have any major Australian competition, so I had a conversation over beers with my mate (Binskin) and came up with the concept for the brand,” he said.

Mr Binskin said the pair are now working to distribute in New Zealand and next month they said they will visit the UK to try and access the European market.

He said it’s not bad for two mates from Palm Beach.

“We grew up in Palmy, I remember when you had to pay the cabbie in advance if you wanted to get home from Surfers Paradise,” Mr Brown said. “(Recently) the Gold Coast has exploded with restaurants, food, beers, barbers and fashion.”
