Bart on brink of history

-

DEFENDING champion Black Heart Bart could be the first horse in more than 100 years to win the Goodwood twice following the release of nominations for Saturday week’s $1 million Morphettville feature.

Black Heart Bart, a winner of almost $3.5 million, heads 38 entries for the Group 1 Goodwood (1200m), arguably South Australia’s most prestigious horse race.

A winner of the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes and Group 1 Futurity Stakes at his past two starts, Black Heart Bart has been marked the hot $2.80 Goodwood favourite in UBET fixed-odds markets.

He is one of five nominations for Victorian trainer Darren Weir.

Weir also has entered El Divino, Sooboog, Rageese and Heart Starter.

The Lindsay Park stable of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig also has five nominations – Derryn, Faatinah, Fuhryk, Ruettiger and Vega Magic, a former WA sprinter who hasn’t raced since winning the AJ Scahill Stakes at Ascot in December.

High-class mare Viddora, an eye-catching, fast-finishing second in Saturday’s $1 million UBET Classic at Morphettville, has top billing among 11 local nominations for the Goodwood and trainer Lloyd Kennewell has indicated the four-year-old is almost certain to contest the May 20 feature.

Another interesting entry is Group 1-winning threeyearHey Doc from the Tony McEvoy stable.

The gelding hasn’t raced since running down the track in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile at Randwick on April 1.

Two Perth horses have been nominated – the Simon Miller-trained First Among Equals and Neville Parnham’s Malibu Style.
