BREAM US UP FISHOS – $3000 IS ON THE LINE

- NICHOLAS MCELROY nicholas.mcelroy@news.com.au

A PRIZE pool of $3000 is being used to bait the city’s top fishos into entering the SCIBS Shimano Live Bream Shootout.

And while hauling in the humble bream may sound pretty easy, it’s not.

“You might think you can bring down a bag of bait and get them but it’s very challenging, there are so many variables,” said Currumbin angler Brett Watson, who has registered for the May 27-28 competition.

“There are so many variables with the moon, tide, air pressure and what bait they’re feeding on at any given time.

“Some guys have been doing it about 20 to 30 years. That’s why I’m relying a lot on my team-mate Alex.”

Mr Watson said the larger competition-winning bream of up to 35cm can be difficult to catch because they can take up to 25 years to grow to that size.

“Usually by that time they’ve been caught and released a couple of times,” he said.

Entry to the competition is $50 per person and participants are required to enter as teams of two with a registered boat. The competition zone is from the Nerang River to Jumpinpin with competitors allowed to catch a maximum of 10 fish each.

Channel 7 weather, fishing and beaches reporter Paul Burt is the event’s ambassador at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. “It brings a competitive aspect to the show which is both entertaining and educational,” he said.
