The world’s best are showing their balloon skills at Surfers

THERE were plenty of blowhards and hot air at this Gold Coast convention but the results were spectacular.

For the past three days some of the world’s best amateur and professional balloon artists gathered at the Australasian Balloon Convention at Mantra on View Hotel in Surfers Paradise.

The balloon sword you got at your fifth birthday party wouldn’t cut it here.

Creations included rainbows, hot air balloons, nature displays and fashion designs.

Hungarian balloon fashion artist Nandor Schreiter of Balloon Fashion was the guest speaker.

“(I) always wanted to create something unique for the fashion shows,” Mr Schreiter said, adding his designs were made to fit the models specifically and took “hours” to make.

He said he had been creating balloon fashions for eight years in Europe, where his designs were used every weekend on the catwalk.

Mackay balloon twister Rebecca Leciej created a red dress to be judged at the convention’s competition, but said she usually did “bits of everything” within her business Miss Becky’s Balloons.

“It’s very inspiring to meet people like Nandor. They come from all over the world and for them to show us their techniques, it’s really great,” she said.
