REMEMBER WHEN
GOLD COAST BULLETIN Monday, Sept 14, 1992
THE Labor government chose the Gold Coast as the place to launch its re-election bid by wooing the green vote.
Premier Wayne Goss visited Springbrook to pitch Labor’s environmental policy ahead of the election, vowing to nominate the Scenic Rim rainforest for the World Heritage List.
He said it was important to “preserve, protect and publicly present Queensland’s unique natural diversity”.
Mr Goss, along with Environment Minister Pat Combe, said Labor would double-down on environmental protection.
In other news of the day, the National Party opposition, led by Surfers Paradise MP Rob Borbidge, also made a bid for green votes by focusing on beach pollution.
Mr Borbidge pledged to turn raw sewage into products such as fertiliser and promised to increase national park management.
He launched the policy on Currumbin beach and said the Gold Coast could avoid “the potentially devastating problem of polluted beaches through new technology”.
Labor was re-elected later that year.
Elsewhere, footy fans celebrated as the Brisbane Broncos secured their first grand final berth.
The team scored a 22-12 win over the Illawarra Steelers to make the decider.
Back on the Gold Coast, a family endured a horror end to a weekend ski outing.
Kath Bolot and her daughter Renee, 11, were rushed to Gold Coast Hospital with suspected spinal and neck injuries after crashing upstream from the Carrara Sports Complex.
