Stosur Wimbledon hopes rest on scan

-

Stosur will rest for seven to 10 days before resuming training. Her next scheduled event is at Eastbourne from June 24.

Stosur said the injury meant she was unable to use her two heaviest weapons – serve and forehand – in a shattering loss to Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko.

She remains optimistic about playing Wimbledon.

“I’m still hopeful. I didn’t do anything to it, so I’m hopeful that it’s nothing too serious obviously,” Stosur said in Paris.

“I’m still planning on sticking to my schedule. SAM STOSUR

I“But until I know what it is, I can’t really say anything.

“My hand’s been sore for about three or four days since the day I played doubles here.

“Don’t know what’s wrong with it. From 5-1 in that first set, it was just really, really painful and … wasn’t going away.

“So yesterday I barely hit and just tried to manage it. And, yeah, just tried to get through and did everything I could, but she started playing pretty well as well, so it made life extra hard.”

Nick Kyrgios (hip) is expected to travel to London next week to prepare for Queen’s Club from June 19.

Bernard Tomic (back) has several options heading to Wimbledon, but won’t return to Queen’s where he was a semi-finalist last season.

Poor weather interrupted play on Monday as Jelena Ostapenko, 19, and Timea Bacsinszky, 27, advanced to today’s semi-finals, when both players celebrate birthdays.

In another coincidence, Ostapenko will attempt to become the first player since Gustavo Kuerten to land the French Open has her maiden tour victory.

The last player to do that was Brazilian Kuerten, who won the first of his three Roland Garros titles in 1997 – on the day that Ostapenko was born.
