Barisic, Watson give six of best

- TERRY WILSON terry.wilson@news.com.au

FOUR goals from Andrew Barisic and a brace from Teddy Watson have carried the Gold Coast Knights to top spot on the Gold Coast Premier League ladder.

Playing their rescheduled match against Burleigh Heads at the Croatian Sports Centre on Saturday, the Knights turned on a dominant performance that resulted in a 6-0 win.

It put them level on top of the standings with Surfers Paradise but ahead of the Apollo on goal difference (plus-19 to plus-17).

But the win could come at a price because Englishman Watson, an off-season signing from Palm Beach, injured his right knee, although he completed the fixture in which he scored the opening two goals.

“It is very sore when I straighten it but hopefully I have just jolted it,” Watson said yesterday.

The Watson-Barisic strike partnership is proving a prolific scoring one with 30 goals between the pair this season.

Barisic has 19 of them and

has scooted to a clear lead in the race for the golden boot.

Burleigh coach Keith Garland acknowledged the Knights were far too good in a result that dampened the Bulldogs’ hopes of a place in the top four.

His rival Alex Morrison, though, said his team’s position at top of the ladder has not come as a surprise.

“I thought we’d be top three with Surfers and Broadbeach and that’s the way things have panned out.”

The attention now switched to the BLK Cup with Mudgeeraba and Palm Beach to play a semi-final at Sid Bigg Field tomorrow night.

The winners will earn a crack at Coomera, who beat Broadbeach, in the Cup final.
