Back to sunny days for Meteorologist

- BRAD DAVIDSON

THE form guide reads “eighth, beaten four lengths” but Gold Coast trainer Marcus Wilson insists Meteorologist probably should have won last start as the stayer bids to book a Grafton Cup start today.

Wilson is the first to admit Meteorologist’s form has been patchy this prep but told punters to forget his last run when assessing his Grafton Cup Prelude (2215m) prospects.

“Last start we thought he could win at the Gold Coast but he had 60kg and probably should have won,” Wilson said.

“It was pilot error and he is a horse you have to wind up and get going from the half mile and there was no speed in the race and the jockey rode him like a sit and sprint horse.

“He copped a squeeze down the straight as well and he couldn’t really wind him up and build momentum.”

Meteorologist has won three Saturday city class races in Queensland and Wilson is upbeat he can return to form in the Cup Prelude today.

“He probably has to win that or run well to warrant going on to the Grafton Cup,” Wilson said.

“It’s a nice race for him and he gets in well at the weights.

“He drops 4.5kg from last start and I think he is going good.

“He is a big-track horse and I think Grafton will suit him because it’s not a tight turning track.

“Matt McGuren him and if he can momentum up he strong late.”

The Grafton Cup Prelude joins the $25,000 John Carlton Cup (1206m) as the feature races on the Grafton card today.

It comes as the club prepare for their two-day RamornieGrafton Cup carnival on July 12-13. will build will suit his be
