10,000 RUNNERS CREATE RAINBOW ON DREARY MORNING
LOOMING clouds threatened to produce a grey day yesterday but with a record 10,000 participants at the Colour Run it was anything but dull.
In its fourth year on the Gold Coast, organiser Luke Hannan said he was staggered that a venue shift from Robina to the Broadwater Parklands had helped to double participation – smashing Brisbane’s tally of 4000 runners.
“It’s just incredible to see the numbers bloom like they have and to see people getting behind safe, non-alcoholic fun,” he said.
“I think that Australia’s getting to be a healthier community and people are looking for ways to get out, be happy and be doing some exercise at the same time and that’s really evident with the numbers we’ve got here.
“Every year they get four colour zones but every year we change the theme ... it’s the first year we’ve ever had this “dream tunnel” to give them the sense of the foam at the start.”
Tito Malo and his partner Laverne Roache, both 38, brought their four children from Brisbane for the day, having experienced The Colour Run in Auckland in 2016.
“It’s actually just good fun to take the kids,” Mr Malo said.
“I am (surprised) ... there are much more people (at this event) than (there were) in New Zealand.”
Mr Hannan said that while the Colour Run was a company, his team had committed to involving foster care support charity The Pyjama Foundation.
